Anubis in Ancient Egyptian mythology, is the name of the God of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the Underworld.
Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumed different roles in various contexts. Depicted as a “protector of graves” as early as the First Dynasty, One of his prominent roles was as the god who ushered souls into the afterlife. He attended the weighing scale during the "Weighing of the Heart", in which it was determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead.
Anubis was often depicted as guiding individuals across the threshold from the world of the living to the afterlife.
Traditionally in Egyptian folklore, often upon a decline in health or perhaps under the influence of a curse, it was said that the individual concerned was visited by Anubis, accompanied by the shadow of death and, if one could overcome the overwhelming urge to succumb to the beckoning shadow and forcibly resist the dark powers manifest, taking ownership of one’s own soul, death would be subjugated and would repel back to the underworld, un-appeased. The wearing or presence of a scarab image or talisman was a powerful deterrent to the cold hand of death and was sought by many as a safeguard to such influence and, aid to the preempting or psychic sensing of death *****
